“Jeffrey John Spencer Keen was born at Trowbridge, Wiltshire, on November 26 1923 and grew up in a tiny cottage with no bathroom or electricity. His mother, Blanche, was a district nurse; his father, Frank, a butler at a nearby manor house. Blanche was a COMPULSIVE painter and poet, while Frank enjoyed theatre and opera, and took Jeff to the house in which he worked so that his son could read the books in the library.”

The only boy in his village to be accepted by the local grammar school, Jeff won a scholarship to Oxford, but the Second World War intervened. He was drafted in to work on special projects such as a floating tank. While in the Army he joined the Communist Party. The war made a lifelong impression on Keen’s work – it is evident in the gunfire and explosions that provide the soundtrack to Meatdaze (1968), for example
